Marcel H. Poirier was born on January 10, 1946 in Verdun, Québec. A self-taught artist, he studied Art History at CEGEP Ahuntsic.
Poirier began painting in 1968 after an unfortunate accident Immobilized him. Thanks to an indestructible morale and the encouragement of celebrated artists such as Leo Ayotte, Narcisse Poirier, René Richard and Albert Rousseau, his expositions steadily flourished. and in 1974, Radio-Canada did a story about his studio. In 1975, during an interview with Télé-Métropole, Leo Ayotte declared that Mr. Poirier is "a man consumed by his passion". Poirier received an honorable mention from the Quebec Painting Festival in 1975 and in 1978 he received the Great Art Medal from the same festival. In 1980, the Verdun Cultural Center added his name to their prestigious list of artists. In 1981, he won the first prize at the Giant Painting Competition at the Olympic Stadium.
In 1982 he won the gold medal at the International Painting Show held in Sherbrooke. That same year, his name appeared in Colin S. McDonald’s Dictionary of Canadian Artist.
In 1989, he earned praise for his solo exhibition in one of Montreal’s larger galleries. Marcel H. Poirier’s name appears in more than 15 books on art, one of which is a monograph by Guy Robert published in 1983, other monographs on Poirier’s work have been published in the 1995 edition of Broquet and the February 1995 issue of Reader’s Digest.
For Poirier, drawing was an integral part of childhood. Starting in 1968, he focused on the vivid and warm rural scenarios of Quebec. In 1983 that he began to differentiated himself from his peers by exploring his urban surroundings.
His style and colors are intense. His interpretations of daily urban life are characterized by tight compositions with contrasting tones at the forefront. The characters are void of expression and convey in their movement the solitude, anguish and stress of large cities. Marcel H. Poirier’s art is dedicated to constantly studying and reflecting on the human condition and its destiny. Since 1990, Poirier has also been producing ceramic works in limited quantities and giant totems carved from wood.
