Pablo Picasso is remembered as an innovator in every medium he used to create his works. With etchings, he pushed the existing techniques past their known limits in his drive to imprint his genius on paper. While Picasso produced etchings throughout his career, his output reached its zenith in the late 1960’s, the period of Series 347 and Series 156. Over five hundred etchings were created in a few short years!
Series 347 consists of 347 etchings and aquatints created in a 7-month period during 1968. The etchings were printed by the Crommelynck brothers in their print shop in Mougins, France. Some of these etchings appeared in books as well as in signed and numbered editions. Series 156 consists of 156 additional etchings created between 1969-1971, but not published until after Picasso’s death. Both series were published by Galerie Louise Leiris. Etchings from this period comprehend the full breadth of Picasso’s life. They incorporate themes that appear throughout his career, but these themes are filtered through the prism of the awareness of both his place in art history and his impending mortality. Etchings from these series are among the most affordable of Picasso's graphic works.
