Hardy was a marine painter and watercolourist, born in Sheffield he travelled on the continent, particularly Holland and Italy. In 1884 he was elected a full member of the Royal Society of British Artists, where he exhibited a large proportion of his work. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy and the New Watercolour Society. Within his own lifetime Hardy was very successful and several of his watercolours were reproduced as lithographs. These pencil drawings provide an insight into how the artist worked, both the research he did-including making sketches of other artists pictures-and the way he made colour notes on the drawings to help him construct paintings (in some cases many years later) All of these sketches were produced in 1870, before the artist started exhibiting his work. They were also without doubt used by him as reference material throughout his working life. Each drawing was numbered and the one missing from the sketchbook had been carefully cut out, initialled and dated on the edge of the paper...fully 20 years after it had been drawn.
