Ignaz Marcel Gaugengigl   (1855 - 1932)Gaugengigl, Ignaz Marcel was an accomplished nineteenth century etcher and painter of figure studies and genre scenes, Ignaz Marcel Gaugengigl studied art at the Academy of Munich under William Diez (1878). Gaugengigl moved to Boston in 1880 and immediately established a reputation for his etchings and paintings. His meticulous attention to costumes and detailing of his figures earned him the name, “the Messonier of Boston’.
Gaugengigl became a full member of the Society of American Artists in 1895 and was elected an Associate of the National Academy in 1906. Examples of his art are included in the collections of the Boston Museum of Art and in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
