Signed in the plate lower left: Chagall, etching with hand coloring on paper under glass, Date Created: 1927-1930. Literature: Vollard, 119; H. 192; S. 119. Note: The present work is Plate 26 of 'The Fables of La Fontaine', commissioned by Vollard and executed by Chagall between 1927 and 1930. Two hundred portfolios on Montval were produced and within this edition, 85 examples were hand-colored by Chagall, including the present work. In the scene, a lion goes hunting to celebrate his birthday and hides an ass under a pile of leaves, instructing him to bray loudly in order to startle other beasts. The ass brays, the beasts panic, and the lion catches them. When the ass tries to take some of the credit for the lion's success, the lion says ''You aided; I admit you brayed: / If I'd not known the source from which the sound arose / I might myself have been afraid'' (translation by M. Moore, ''The Fables of La Fontaine'', New York, NY, 1965). The lion shares no credit saying ''For who would want an ass to boast of what he'd done? / It would not be in character'' (trans. M. Moore, 1965). Provenance: The Vincent Price Collection (see verso label); Estate, Central California. Visual: Generally good condition. The print hinged to the upper center of the front mat.
