Marc Chagall was commissioned by Ambroise Vollard in 1930 to create a set of etchings illustrating themes from the Bible. Chagall fist went to Palestine to see the land himself. He then returned to Paris to create the works for the suite. Chagall spent the next eight years etching the plates. He worked on the 105 etchings of the series first between 1931 and 1939 (when the first sixty-five etchings were executed and printed) and then between 1952 and 1956 (when the remaining forty etchings were completed and printed). The image is unsigned and unnumbered as issued. This piece was printed between 1931 - 1939 and was published by as part the "La Bible" suite in a limited edition of 295 released in 1956.  Jeremiahs International
